1 John 5
1Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been fathered by God, and everyone who loves the Father loves the one fathered by him. 2By this we know that we love the children of God: whenever we love God and carry out his commandments. 3For this is the love of God: that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not a heavy burden, 4because everything fathered by God conquers the world. And this is the victory that has conquered the world: our faith. 5Who is the one conquering the world if not the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
6This is the one who came through water and blood—Jesus Christ. Not by the water only, but by the water and by the blood. And the Spirit is the one who bears witness, because the Spirit is the truth. 7For there are three who bear witness: 8the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three are in agreement. 9If we accept human witness, the witness of God is greater, because this is the witness of God: that he has witnessed concerning his Son. 10The one believing in the Son of God has the witness within himself. The one who does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because he has not believed in the witness that God has witnessed concerning his Son. 11And this is the witness: that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12The one who has the Son has the life; the one who does not have the Son of God does not have the life.
13I have written these things to you—to those who believe in the name of the Son of God—so that you may know that you have eternal life. 14And this is the boldness we have toward him: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we possess the requests we have asked of him. 16If anyone sees his brother committing a sin that does not lead toward death, he will ask, and he will give him life—for those whose sin does not lead toward death. There is a sin that leads toward death; I am not saying that he should make a request concerning that. 17All injustice is sin, and there is sin that does not lead toward death.
18We know that everyone fathered by God does not continue to sin, but the one who was fathered by God keeps him safe, and the evil one does not touch him. 19We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. 20And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding so that we may know the True One; and we are in the True One, in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. 21Little children, guard yourselves from the idols.
