1 John 5

¹Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been fathered by God, and everyone who loves the Father loves the one fathered by him. ²By this we know that we love the children of God: whenever we love God and carry out his commandments. ³For this is the love of God: that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not a heavy burden, ⁴because everything fathered by God conquers the world. And this is the victory that has conquered the world: our faith. ⁵Who is the one conquering the world if not the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

⁶This is the one who came through water and blood—Jesus Christ. Not by the water only, but by the water and by the blood. And the Spirit is the one who bears witness, because the Spirit is the truth. ⁷For there are three who bear witness: ⁸the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three are in agreement. ⁹If we accept human witness, the witness of God is greater, because this is the witness of God: that he has witnessed concerning his Son. ¹⁰The one believing in the Son of God has the witness within himself. The one who does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because he has not believed in the witness that God has witnessed concerning his Son. ¹¹And this is the witness: that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. ¹²The one who has the Son has the life; the one who does not have the Son of God does not have the life.

¹³I have written these things to you—to those who believe in the name of the Son of God—so that you may know that you have eternal life. ¹⁴And this is the boldness we have toward him: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. ¹⁵And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we possess the requests we have asked of him. ¹⁶If anyone sees his brother committing a sin that does not lead toward death, he will ask, and he will give him life—for those whose sin does not lead toward death. There is a sin that leads toward death; I am not saying that he should make a request concerning that. ¹⁷All injustice is sin, and there is sin that does not lead toward death.

¹⁸We know that everyone fathered by God does not continue to sin, but the one who was fathered by God keeps him safe, and the evil one does not touch him. ¹⁹We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. ²⁰And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding so that we may know the True One; and we are in the True One, in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. ²¹Little children, guard yourselves from the idols.
