2 Peter 1

1Symeon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have been allotted a faith of equal value to ours through the justice of our God and Savior Jesus Christ: 2May favor and peace be multiplied to you in the full recognition of God and of Jesus our Lord.

3For his divine power has granted to us everything necessary for life and devotion, through the full recognition of the one who called us by his own glory and excellence. 4Through these he has granted to us his precious and greatest promises, so that through them you might become sharers in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world because of disordered desire.

5For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, 6and knowledge with self-mastery, and self-mastery with steadfast endurance, and steadfast endurance with devotion, 7and devotion with sibling affection, and sibling affection with love. 8For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being idle or unfruitful in the full recognition of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9For whoever lacks these things is blind, being so short-sighted that they have forgotten the cleansing of their past sins.

10Therefore, brothers and sisters, be all the more diligent to make your calling and election secure; for by doing these things, you will never stumble. 11In this way, the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be richly provided for you.

12Therefore, I intend to keep reminding you of these things, even though you know them and are established in the truth that is present with you. 13I consider it right, as long as I am in this temporary tent, to wake you up by way of a reminder, 14knowing that the laying aside of my tent is coming quickly, just as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me. 15And I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able to recall these things at any time.

16For we did not follow cleverly crafted myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses who beheld his majesty. 17For he received honor and glory from God the Father when a voice was brought to him by the Majestic Glory, saying: This is my Son, my Beloved, in whom I have taken delight.” 18We ourselves heard this voice brought from heaven while we were with him on the holy mountain.

19And we have the prophetic word made more secure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a murky place, until the day dawns and the Light-bringer rises in your hearts. 20Know this first of all: no prophecy of Scripture comes from one’s own explanation, 21for no prophecy was ever brought forth by human will, but people spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
