Luke 10
1After these things, the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them out ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place he himself intended to go. 2He said to them, "The harvest is vast, but the workers are few. Therefore, beg the Lord of the harvest to thrust out workers into his harvest. 3Go! Look, I am sending you out like lambs in the middle of wolves. 4Carry no money-bag, no knapsack, no sandals, and do not stop to exchange greetings with anyone along the road.
5Whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace to this house.' 6And if a person of peace is there, your peace will rest upon them; but if not, it will return to you. 7Stay in that same house, eating and drinking whatever they provide, for the worker is worthy of his wages. Do not move around from house to house. 8Also, whatever town you enter and they welcome you, eat what is set before you. 9Heal the sick who are there and say to them, 'The kingdom of God has come near to you.'
10But whatever town you enter and they do not welcome you, go out into its wide streets and say, 11'Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you. Nevertheless, know this: the kingdom of God has come near.' 12I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom on that day than for that town.
13Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! Because if the works of power done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have turned their lives around long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 14But for Tyre and Sidon it will be more bearable at the judgment than for you. 15And you, Capernaum—will you be 'exalted to heaven'? No, you will be 'brought down to Hades.'
16The one who listens to you listens to me, and the one who rejects you rejects me; and the one who rejects me rejects the one who sent me."
17The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!" 18He said to them, "I was watching Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19Look, I have given you the authority to trample on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will ever harm you. 20However, do not rejoice in this—that the spirits are subject to you—but rejoice that your names stand written in the heavens."
21At that very hour, Jesus exulted in the Holy Spirit and said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you hid these things from the 'wise and intelligent' and revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure. 22All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him."
23Turning to the disciples, he said privately, "Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! 24For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see and did not see it, and to hear what you hear and did not hear it."
25And look, an expert in religious law stood up to test him, saying, "Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" 26He said to him, "What is written in the Law? How do you read it?" 27He answered, "You shall love the Lord your God from your whole heart, with your whole soul, with your whole strength, and with your whole mind; and your neighbor as yourself." 28Jesus said to him, "You have answered correctly. Do this and you will live."
29But wanting to demonstrate that he was just, the lawyer said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" 30Taking up the question, Jesus said, "A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among bandits. They stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half-dead. 31By chance, a certain priest was going down that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. 32Likewise, a Levite also came to the place, saw him, and passed by on the opposite side. 33But a certain Samaritan, while traveling, came upon him, and when he saw him, he was moved with deep compassion. 34He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35The next day, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, 'Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I return.' 36Which of these three seems to you to have become a neighbor to the man who fell among the bandits?"
37He said, "The one who practiced mercy toward him." Jesus said to him, "Go and do the same."
38As they were traveling, he entered a certain village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. 39She had a sister called Mary, who sat down at the Lord’s feet and was listening to his word. 40But Martha was pulled away by all her tasks of hospitality. She stood over them and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do the serving alone? Tell her to give me a hand!" 41The Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and bothered about many things, 42but few things are needed—or only one. For Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her."
