Luke 22
1The Festival of Unleavened Bread, which is called Passover, was approaching. 2The chief priests and the scholars were looking for a way to do away with Jesus, for they were afraid of the people. 3Then Satan entered into Judas, called Iscariot, who was numbered among the Twelve. 4He went away and discussed with the chief priests and temple officers how he might hand Jesus over to them. 5They were delighted and agreed to give him silver. 6He consented and began looking for an opportunity to hand him over to them away from the crowd.
7Then the day of Unleavened Bread came, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.” 9They said to him, “Where do you want us to prepare it?” 10He said to them, “Look, when you have entered the city, a man carrying a ceramic jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters, 11and say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you: Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 12And that man will show you a large, furnished upper room; make preparations there.” 13So they went and found everything just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.
14When the hour came, he reclined at the table, and the apostles with him. 15And he said to them, “I have fervently desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16For I tell you, I will certainly not eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17And after receiving a cup and giving thanks, he said, “Take this and share it among yourselves. 18For I tell you, from now on I will not drink from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” 19And he took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is being given for you; do this in my remembrance.” 20And he did the same with the cup after the meal, saying, “This cup is the New Covenant in my blood, which is being poured out for you.
21But look! The hand of the one handing me over is with mine on the table. 22For the Son of Humanity is going his way according to what has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is handed over!” 23And they began to debate among themselves which of them it could be who was going to do this.
24A rivalry also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be the greatest. 25But he said to them, “The kings of the nations lord it over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called ‘Benefactors.’ 26But you are not to be like that. Instead, let the greatest among you become like the youngest, and the leader like the one who serves. 27For who is greater: the one reclining at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one reclining? But I am in your midst as the one who serves.
28You are the ones who have stood by me in my trials. 29And I assign to you a kingdom, just as my Father assigned one to me, 30so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom; and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
31Simon, Simon, look! Satan has demanded to sift all of you like wheat. 32But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And you, when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” 33Peter said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death!” 34Jesus said, “I tell you, Peter, a rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you even know me.”
35And he said to them, “When I sent you out without a money bag or a travel pack or sandals, did you lack anything?” They said, “Nothing.” 36Then he said to them, “But now, let the one who has a money bag take it, and likewise a travel pack. And let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one. 37For I tell you that this which is written must be fulfilled in me: ‘And he was counted among the lawless.’ Indeed, the matters concerning me are reaching their fulfillment.” 38They said, “Lord, look! Here are two swords.” He said to them, “It is enough.”
39He went out and made his way, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples followed him. 40When he arrived at the place, he said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into trial.” 41And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, knelt down, and began to pray, 42saying, “Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” 45When he rose from prayer and came to the disciples, he found them sleeping from grief. 46He said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray, so that you may not enter into trial.”
47While he was still speaking, look! A crowd appeared, and the man called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him. 48But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you handing over the Son of Humanity with a kiss?” 49When those around him saw what was about to happen, they said, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” 50And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 51But Jesus responded, “Stop! No more of this.” And he touched the man's ear and healed him. 52Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders who had come for him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs as if against an insurrectionist? 53While I was with you every day in the temple, you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour—the dominion of darkness.”
54After they seized him, they led him away and brought him into the house of the high priest. Peter was following at a distance. 55When they had lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them. 56A servant girl saw him sitting in the firelight, and looking closely at him, she said, “This man was with him too.” 57But he denied it, saying, “I don’t know him, woman!” 58A little later, someone else saw him and said, “You are one of them too.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not!” 59About an hour later, another man insisted, “Certainly this man was with him, for he is a Galilean!” 60But Peter said, “Man, I don't know what you’re talking about!” And immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 61The Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, “Before a rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.” 62And he went outside and wept bitterly.
63The men who were holding Jesus began mocking him and beating him. 64They blindfolded him and kept asking, “Prophesy! Who is the one who hit you?” 65And they said many other blasphemous things against him.
66When day came, the council of the elders of the people gathered together—both chief priests and scholars—and they led him away to their high council. 67They said, “If you are the Anointed, tell us.” But he said to them, “If I tell you, you will certainly not believe; 68and if I ask you a question, you will certainly not answer. 69But from now on, the Son of Humanity will be seated at the right hand of the Power of God.” 70They all said, “Are you, then, the Son of God?” He said to them, “You yourselves say that I am.” 71They said, “What further need do we have of testimony? For we have heard it ourselves from his own mouth!”
