Luke 22

1Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the one called Passover, was drawing near. 2And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how they might do away with him, for they feared the people.

3Then Satan entered into Judas, the one called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve. 4And going away, he conferred with the chief priests and temple captains about how he might hand him over to them. 5And they were delighted and agreed to give him silver. 6And he consented, and began looking for an opportune moment to hand him over to them apart from the crowd.

7Then came the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8And he sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and prepare the Passover for us, so that we may eat it." 9And they said to him, "Where do you want us to prepare it?" 10And he said to them, "Look, when you enter the city, a man carrying a clay jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters. 11And you will say to the master of the house, 'The Teacher says to you: Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?' 12And he will show you a large upper room, furnished. Prepare it there." 13And having gone, they found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

14And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him. 15And he said to them, "With deep longing I have longed to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16For I tell you, I will certainly not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God." 17And having received a cup and given thanks, he said, "Take this and divide it among yourselves. 18For I tell you, I will certainly not drink from now on from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." 19And having taken bread and given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body, which is being given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." 20And the cup likewise, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is being poured out for you."

21"But look—the hand of the one betraying me is with me on the table. 22For the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man through whom he is betrayed." 23And they began to discuss among themselves which of them it might be who was about to do this.

24A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. 25And he said to them, "The kings of the nations lord it over them, and those who hold power over them are called 'Benefactors.' 26But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become like the youngest, and the one who leads like the one who serves. 27For who is greater—the one reclining at table or the one serving? Is it not the one reclining? Yet I am among you as the one who serves. 28You are the ones who have remained with me through my trials. 29And I covenant to you, just as my Father covenanted to me, a kingdom, 30so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel."

31"Simon, Simon—look, Satan has demanded to sift all of you like wheat. 32But I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers." 33But he said to him, "Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death." 34But he said, "I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today before you have denied three times that you know me."

35And he said to them, "When I sent you out without purse, bag, or sandals, did you lack anything?" And they said, "Nothing." 36He said to them, "But now, let the one who has a purse take it, and likewise a bag. And let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one. 37For I tell you, this scripture must be fulfilled in me: 'And he was counted among the lawless.' For what concerns me is reaching its end." 38And they said, "Lord, look—two swords here." And he said to them, "It is enough."

39And going out, he went as was his custom to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples also followed him. 40And when he arrived at the place, he said to them, "Pray that you do not enter into testing." 41And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and kneeling down, he began to pray, 42saying, "Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me. Yet not my will but yours be done." 43Then an angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him. 44And being in anguish, he prayed more fervently, and his sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground.

45And rising from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping from grief. 46And he said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray, so that you do not enter into testing."

47While he was still speaking—look!—a crowd, and the one called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. And he approached Jesus to kiss him. 48But Jesus said to him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?" 49And when those around him saw what was about to happen, they said, "Lord, should we strike with the sword?" 50And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 51But Jesus answered and said, "No more of this!" And touching his ear, he healed him. 52Then Jesus said to the chief priests, temple captains, and elders who had come out against him, "Have you come out with swords and clubs as if against an insurrectionist? 53Day after day I was with you in the temple, and you did not lay hands on me. But this is your hour—and the dominion of darkness."

54Then having seized him, they led him away and brought him into the house of the high priest. And Peter was following at a distance. 55And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them. 56And a servant girl, seeing him sitting by the firelight and staring at him intently, said, "This man also was with him." 57But he denied it, saying, "Woman, I do not know him." 58And a little later someone else saw him and said, "You also are one of them." But Peter said, "Man, I am not." 59And about an hour later another insisted, saying, "Certainly this man also was with him, for he is a Galilean!" 60But Peter said, "Man, I do not know what you are talking about." And immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 61And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, "Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times." 62And going outside, he wept bitterly.

63Now the men who were holding Jesus began mocking him, beating him. 64And having blindfolded him, they kept asking, "Prophesy! Who is it that struck you?" 65And they said many other things against him, reviling him.

66And when day came, the council of elders of the people assembled—both chief priests and scribes—and they led him away to their council, 67saying, "If you are the Messiah, tell us." But he said to them, "If I tell you, you will certainly not believe. 68And if I ask you, you will certainly not answer. 69But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God." 70And they all said, "So you are the Son of God?" And he said to them, "You say that I am." 71And they said, "What further need do we have for testimony? For we ourselves have heard it from his own mouth."
