Luke 24
1On the first day of the week, at the first light of dawn, the women came to the tomb carrying the aromatic oils they had prepared. 2They found the stone already rolled away from the tomb, 3but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4It happened that while they were utterly perplexed by this, behold, two men stood by them in clothing that flashed like lightning. 5As the women became terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, "Why do you seek the living one among the dead? 6He is not here, but he has been raised. Remember how he spoke to you while he was still in Galilee, 7saying, ‘It is necessary for the Son of Man to be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and to be crucified, and on the third day to rise again.’"
8Then they remembered his words, 9and returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the Eleven and to all the rest. 10Now it was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Mary the mother of James; the other women with them were also telling these things to the apostles. 11But these words appeared to them like nonsense, and they refused to believe the women. 12Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb; stooping down, he saw only the linen cloths. Then he went away by himself, wondering at what had happened.
13And behold, on that very day, two of them were traveling to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, 14and they were conversing with each other about all these things that had occurred. 15It happened that while they were conversing and debating, Jesus himself approached and began traveling with them, 16but their eyes were restrained so as not to recognize him. 17He said to them, "What are these words you are tossing back and forth to each other as you walk?" They stood still, looking dismal.
18One of them, named Cleopas, answered him, "Are you the only visitor in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?"
19He said to them, "What things?" They said to him, "The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene, who was a man—a prophet powerful in deed and word before God and all the people; 20and how our chief priests and rulers handed him over to a sentence of death and crucified him. 21But we were hoping that he was the one destined to liberate Israel. What is more, it is now the third day since these things happened. 22Moreover, some women from our group astounded us; they were at the tomb early this morning, 23and when they did not find his body, they came saying they had even seen a vision of angels who say that he is alive. 24Some of those with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see."
25Then he said to them, "O senseless ones, and slow in heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26Was it not necessary for the Messiah to suffer these things and so enter into his glory?" 27And beginning from Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted thoroughly for them the things concerning himself in all the Scriptures.
28As they approached the village where they were traveling, he acted as if he were going further. 29But they strongly urged him, saying, "Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day has already declined." So he went in to stay with them. 30And it happened that while he was reclining at table with them, he took the bread, blessed it, and after breaking it, he began giving it to them. 31Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight. 32They said to each other, "Was not our heart burning within us while he was speaking to us on the road, as he opened the Scriptures to us?"
33They got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the Eleven and those with them gathered together, 34saying, "The Lord has really been raised, and he has appeared to Simon!" 35Then they explained what had happened on the road, and how he became known to them in the breaking of the bread.
36While they were talking about these things, Jesus himself stood in their midst. 37They were startled and terrified, thinking they were seeing a spirit. 38He said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do questionings arise in your hearts? 39Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have." 40Having said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. 41While they were still disbelieving for joy and wondering, he said to them, "Do you have anything edible here?" 42They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43and taking it, he ate in their presence.
44Then he said to them, "These are my words which I spoke to you while I was still with you: that everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms must be fulfilled." 45Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46and he said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Messiah should suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47and that turning to God for the release of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all the nations—beginning from Jerusalem. 48You are witnesses of these things. 49And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you; but stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high."
50Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands, he blessed them. 51And it happened that while he was blessing them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. 52And they, having bowed down in worship before him, returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53and were continually in the Temple courts blessing God.
