Luke 24

1On the first day of the week, at the deep of dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices they had prepared. 2They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3but when they entered, they did not find the body. 4And while they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men stood before them in clothing that flashed like lightning. 5The women became terrified and bowed their faces to the ground. The men said to them, "Why do you seek the living one among the dead? 6He is not here—he has been raised. Remember how he spoke to you while he was still in Galilee, 7saying that the Son of Man must be handed over into the hands of sinful people and be crucified, and on the third day rise." 8And they remembered his words.

9Returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James—these and the other women with them were telling these things to the apostles. 11But these words appeared to them like delirious nonsense, and they refused to believe the women. 12Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Stooping to peer in, he saw only the linen wrappings. And he went away to his home, wondering at what had happened.

13Now look—on that same day, two of them were traveling to a village sixty stadia from Jerusalem, named Emmaus, 14and they were conversing with each other about all these things that had happened. 15And while they were conversing and discussing, Jesus himself drew near and began walking with them, 16but their eyes were held back from recognizing him.

17He said to them, "What are these words you are tossing back and forth with each other as you walk?" And they stood still, their faces downcast. 18One of them, named Cleopas, answered him, "Are you the only visitor in Jerusalem who does not know what has happened there in these days?"

19He said to them, "What things?" They said to him, "The things about Jesus the Nazarene—a man who was a prophet, powerful in deed and word before God and all the people; 20and how our chief priests and rulers handed him over to a sentence of death and crucified him. 21But we had been hoping that he was the one about to redeem Israel. And besides all this, today is now the third day since these things happened. 22Moreover, some women from among us astounded us. They went to the tomb early in the morning 23and, not finding his body, came back saying they had even seen a vision of angels who said he was alive. 24Some of those with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see."

25And he said to them, "O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke! 26Was it not necessary for the Messiah to suffer these things and enter into his glory?" 27And beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

28They drew near to the village where they were going, and he acted as though he would travel further. 29But they urged him strongly, saying, "Stay with us, because it is toward evening and the day has already declined." So he went in to stay with them.

30And when he reclined at table with them, he took the bread, blessed it, broke it, and began giving it to them. 31Their eyes were opened and they recognized him—and he became invisible from them. 32They said to each other, "Was not our heart burning within us while he was speaking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?"

33Rising up that very hour, they returned to Jerusalem and found the eleven and those with them gathered together, 34saying, "The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!" 35And they began recounting what had happened on the road and how he was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.

36While they were saying these things, he himself stood in their midst. 37Startled and terrified, they thought they were seeing a spirit. 38He said to them, "Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39Look at my hands and my feet—that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have." 40[And saying this, he showed them his hands and feet.]

41But while they were still disbelieving from joy and marveling, he said to them, "Do you have anything to eat here?" 42They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43and taking it, he ate it before them.

44He said to them, "These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you—that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled." 45Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, 46and said to them, "Thus it is written: the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, 47and repentance for the forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all the nations—beginning from Jerusalem. 48You are witnesses of these things. 49And look—I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But you are to remain in the city until you are clothed with power from on high."

50He led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands, he blessed them. 51And while he was blessing them, he parted from them [and was carried up into heaven]. 52And they [worshiped him and] returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53and were continually in the temple blessing God.
