Mark 5
1And they came to the other side of the sea, to the region of the Gerasenes. 2And as he was getting out of the boat, immediately a man with an unclean spirit met him from among the tombs. 3He had his dwelling among the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore—not even with a chain— 4because he had often been bound with shackles and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him and the shackles shattered, and no one had the strength to subdue him. 5And continually, night and day, among the tombs and in the hills, he was crying out and gashing himself with stones.
6And seeing Jesus from a distance, he ran and prostrated himself before him, 7and crying out with a loud voice, he says, "What is there between you and me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God—do not torment me!" 8For he had been saying to him, "Come out of the man, unclean spirit!" 9And he asked him, "What is your name?" And he says to him, "Legion is my name, because we are many." 10And he begged him urgently not to send them out of the region.
11Now there was a large herd of pigs there, feeding on the hillside. 12And they begged him, saying, "Send us into the pigs, so that we may enter them." 13And he permitted them. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs, and the herd—about two thousand—charged down the steep bank into the sea and were drowning in the sea.
14And those tending them fled and reported it in the town and in the countryside. And people came to see what had happened. 15And they come to Jesus and see the demonized man sitting there, clothed and in his right mind—the one who had had the legion—and they were afraid. 16And those who had seen it described to them how it had happened to the demonized man, and about the pigs. 17And they began to beg him to leave their territory.
18And as he was getting into the boat, the man who had been demonized begged him that he might be with him. 19But he did not permit him. Instead he says to him, "Go to your home, to your own people, and report to them what the Lord has done for you and how he had mercy on you." 20And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis what Jesus had done for him, and everyone was amazed.
21And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around him, and he was beside the sea. 22And one of the synagogue leaders comes, named Jairus, and seeing him, he falls at his feet 23and begs him urgently, saying, "My little daughter is at death's door. Come and lay your hands on her so that she may be healed and live." 24And he went with him. And a large crowd was following him and pressing in on him. 25And a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years— 26and had suffered much under many physicians and had spent everything she had and had not been helped at all but rather had grown worse— 27having heard about Jesus, came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. 28For she had been saying to herself, "If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed." 29And immediately the source of her blood dried up, and she knew in her body that she was healed from her affliction. 30And immediately Jesus, perceiving within himself that power had gone out from him, turned around in the crowd and said, "Who touched my clothes?" 31And his disciples said to him, "You see the crowd pressing in on you, and you say, 'Who touched me?'" 32But he kept looking around to see the woman who had done this. 33And the woman, afraid and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. 34And he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has saved you. Go in peace, and be healed from your affliction."
35While he was still speaking, people come from the synagogue leader's house, saying, "Your daughter has died. Why trouble the teacher any further?" 36But Jesus, disregarding the message being spoken, says to the synagogue leader, "Do not be afraid—only trust." 37And he did not permit anyone to accompany him except Peter and James and John, the brother of James. 38And they come to the house of the synagogue leader, and he sees a commotion—people weeping and wailing loudly. 39And entering, he says to them, "Why are you in an uproar and weeping? The child has not died but is sleeping." 40And they laughed at him. But he, having put them all outside, takes the child's father and mother and those who were with him, and goes in where the child was. 41And grasping the child by the hand, he says to her, "Talitha koum"—which means, "Little girl, I say to you, rise." 42And immediately the girl stood up and began walking around—for she was twelve years old—and immediately they were utterly astounded. 43And he strictly ordered them that no one should know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.
