Mark 9
1And he was saying to them: "Truly I tell you, there are some of those standing here who will certainly not taste death until they see the kingdom of God having come in power."
2And after six days, Jesus takes Peter and James and John and leads them up a high mountain, by themselves, alone. And he was transformed before them, 3and his garments became dazzling—intensely white, such as no launderer on earth could whiten them. 4And Elijah appeared to them, with Moses, and they were conversing with Jesus.
5And Peter, responding, says to Jesus: "Rabbi, it is good for us to be here! Let us make three shelters—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." 6For he did not know what to say, for they had become terrified. 7And a cloud came, overshadowing them, and a voice came from the cloud: "This is my Son, the Beloved—listen to him!" 8And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone, but only Jesus with them.
9And as they were coming down from the mountain, he ordered them to relate to no one what they had seen, except when the Son of Man has risen from the dead. 10And they kept the matter to themselves, debating among themselves what this "rising from the dead" meant. 11And they were asking him: "Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?" 12And he said to them: "Elijah indeed comes first and restores all things. Yet how is it written concerning the Son of Man? That he must suffer many things and be treated as nothing. 13But I tell you that Elijah has indeed come, and they did to him whatever they wanted, just as it is written concerning him."
14And when they came to the disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and scribes arguing with them. 15And immediately, when all the crowd saw him, they were utterly amazed, and running up to him, they greeted him. 16And he asked them: "What are you arguing about with them?" 17And one from the crowd answered him: "Teacher, I brought my son to you—he has a mute spirit. 18And wherever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams at the mouth and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not strong enough."
19And answering them, he says: "O faithless generation! How long must I be with you? How long must I bear with you? Bring him to me." 20And they brought him to him. And when the spirit saw him, it immediately threw him into convulsions, and falling on the ground, he was rolling around, foaming at the mouth. 21And Jesus asked his father: "How long has this been happening to him?" And he said: "From childhood. 22And many times it has thrown him both into fire and into water to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us." 23And Jesus said to him: "'If you can'!—All things are possible for the one who believes." 24Immediately the father of the child cried out: "I believe! Help my unbelief!"
25And when Jesus saw that a crowd was running together toward them, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it: "Mute and deaf spirit—I command you: come out of him and never again enter him." 26And after crying out and convulsing him violently, it came out. And he became like a corpse, so that many were saying, "He has died." 27But Jesus, grasping his hand, raised him, and he rose.
28And when he had gone into a house, his disciples asked him privately: "Why were we not able to cast it out?" 29And he said to them: "This kind can come out by nothing except prayer."
30And leaving there, they were passing through Galilee, and he did not want anyone to know, 31for he was teaching his disciples. And he was telling them: "The Son of Man is being handed over into human hands, and they will kill him, and after being killed, after three days he will rise." 32But they did not understand the saying, and they were afraid to ask him.
33And they came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house, he asked them: "What were you discussing on the way?" 34But they were silent, for on the way they had been arguing with one another about who was greatest. 35And sitting down, he called the twelve and says to them: "If anyone wants to be first, he must be last of all and servant of all." 36And taking a child, he set him in their midst, and taking him in his arms, he said to them: 37"Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me. And whoever receives me receives not me but the one who sent me."
38John said to him: "Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us." 39But Jesus said: "Do not stop him. For there is no one who will do a mighty work in my name and then be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. 40For whoever is not against us is for us. 41For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ—truly I tell you, he will certainly not lose his reward.
42"And whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble—it would be better for him if a millstone turned by a donkey were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.
43"And if your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go away into Gehenna, into the unquenchable fire. 45And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame than with two feet to be thrown into Gehenna. 47And if your eye causes you to stumble, tear it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into Gehenna, 48'where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.'
49"For everyone will be salted with fire. 50Salt is good. But if salt becomes saltless, with what will you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another."
