Matthew 11

1And it happened that when Jesus had finished giving these charges to his twelve disciples, he moved on from there to teach and to herald his message in their cities.

2Now when John heard in prison about the works of the Messiah, he sent word through his disciples 3and said to him, "Are you 'The Coming One,' or should we look for someone else?"

4Jesus answered them, "Go and report to John what you are hearing and seeing: 5the blind are seeing again and the lame are walking, lepers are being cleansed and the deaf are hearing, the dead are being raised and the poor are being heralded with good news. 6And a blessing rests on whoever is not tripped up by me."

7As these men were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to gaze at? A reed shaken by the wind? 8Really, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft robes? Look, those who wear soft things are in the palaces of kings. 9So why did you go out? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and someone much greater than a prophet. 10This is the one about whom it stands written: 'Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.'

11Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one has arisen greater than John the Baptizer; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of the heavens is greater than he. 12From the days of John the Baptizer until now, the kingdom of the heavens is breaking through with force, and forceful people are seizing it. 13For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John; 14and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah, the one who was destined to come. 15Let the one who has ears listen!

16To what shall I compare this generation? It is like little children sitting in the marketplaces who call out to one another, 17saying: 'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a funeral dirge, and you did not beat your chests in grief.'

18For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, 'He has a demon!' 19The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Look! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' Yet wisdom is proven just by her works."

20Then he began to reproach the cities in which most of his miracles had happened, because they did not change their hearts and minds: 21"Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have changed their hearts and minds long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22Nevertheless I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. 23And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will go down to Hades. For if the miracles done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. 24Nevertheless I tell you that it will be more bearable for the land of Sodom on the day of judgment than for you."

25At that time Jesus spoke up and said, "I give you praise, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the 'wise' and 'learned' and have revealed them to infants. 26Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure. 27Everything has been handed over to me by my Father, and no one fully knows the Son except the Father, nor does anyone fully know the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

28Come to me, all you who are toiling and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle in my strength and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30For my yoke is well-fitting and my burden is light."
