Matthew 4

Then Jesus was led up into the wilderness by the Spirit to be tested by the Accuser. 2After fasting for forty days and forty nights, he was famished. 3The tempter approached him and said, "Since you are the Son of God, speak so that these stones become loaves of bread."

But Jesus answered, "It is written: A human being shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes out through the mouth of God.’"

Then the Accuser took him along into the Holy City and stood him on the highest wing of the temple, 6and said to him, "Since you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written: He will command his messengers concerning you,’ and on their hands they will lift you up, so that you do not strike your foot against a stone.’"

Jesus said to him, "Again, it is written: You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’"

Again, the Accuser took him along to an exceedingly high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the cosmos and their glory, 9and said to him, "I will give you all these things if you will fall down and do me homage."

Then Jesus said to him, "Go away, Satan! For it is written: You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.’" 11Then the Accuser left him, and behold, angels approached and began to minister to him.

Now when Jesus heard that John had been handed over to custody, he withdrew into Galilee. 13Leaving Nazareth, he went and settled in Capernaum by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14so that what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled:

"Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Nations— 16the people sitting in darkness saw a great light, and for those sitting in the region and shadow of death, a light has dawned upon them."

From then on, Jesus began to herald his message and say, "Change your hearts and minds, for the Kingdom of the Heavens has drawn near."

As he was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers—Simon, the one called Peter, and Andrew his brother—casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19And he said to them, "Come, follow behind me, and I will make you fishers of people." 20Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 21Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. 22Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and heralding the good news of the Kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of infirmity among the people. 24The report about him went out into all Syria; and they brought to him all who were suffering, those seized by various diseases and torments, those possessed by demons, those who were moon-struck, and the paralyzed—and he healed them. 25Large crowds followed him from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.
