Matthew 6
"Be careful not to practice your justice before others in order to be a spectacle for them. Otherwise, you have no reward from your Father in the heavens.
So, whenever you perform a deed of mercy, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the performers do in the synagogues and in the streets so that they may be glorified by people. Truly I tell you: they have received their payment in full. 3But when you perform a deed of mercy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4so that your mercy may be in secret; and your Father, who sees what is secret, will repay you.
And when you pray, you must not be like the performers; for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the main streets so that they may be visible to people. Truly I tell you: they have received their payment in full. 6But when you pray, enter into your innermost room, close your door, and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father, who sees what is secret, will repay you.
When you pray, do not babble like the outsiders, for they think that by their many words they will be heard. 8Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you even ask him. 9So, pray in this way: 'Our Father in the heavens, may your name be kept holy. 10May your kingdom come. May your will be done, as in heaven, so also on earth. 11Give us today the bread we need for the day. 12And cancel our debts, as we also have canceled the debts of those who owe us. 13And do not lead us into a time of trial, but rescue us from the evil one.'
For if you forgive others their false steps, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15But if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your false steps.
Whenever you fast, do not become gloomy like the performers, for they disfigure their faces so that they appear to be fasting to others. Truly I tell you: they have received their payment in full. 17But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18so that you do not appear to be fasting to others, but to your Father who is in the hidden place; and your Father, who sees what is hidden, will repay you.
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and decay destroy, and where thieves dig through and steal. 20Instead, store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor decay destroys, and where thieves do not dig through or steal. 21For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
The eye is the lamp of the body. So if your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light. 23But if your eye is unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
No one is able to serve two masters. For either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You are not able to serve God and Wealth.
For this reason, I tell you: do not be anxious about your life—what you will eat—nor about your body—what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26Look at the birds of the sky: they do not sow, nor do they reap, nor do they gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? 27And which of you, by being anxious, is able to add a single hour to his life's span?
And why are you anxious about clothing? Observe how the wildflowers of the field grow: they do not labor, nor do they spin. 29Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was clothed like one of these. 30If God so dresses the grass of the field, which is here today and thrown into the furnace tomorrow, will he not much more clothe you, you of little faith?
So do not be anxious, saying, 'What will we eat?' or 'What will we drink?' or 'What will we wear?' 32For the outsiders chase after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33But seek first his kingdom and his justice, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34Therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."
