Romans 8

1Therefore, there is now no verdict of condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death. 3For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did: by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as a sacrifice for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, 4so that the justice required by the law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

5For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. 6For the mindset of the flesh is death, but the mindset of the Spirit is life and peace. 7This is because the mindset of the flesh is hostile toward God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor is it even able to do so. 8Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

9You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to him. 10But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of justice. 11And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit dwelling in you.

12So then, brothers and sisters, we are under obligation—but not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13For if you live according to the flesh, you are going to die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption as heirs, by which we cry out, Abba! Father!” 16The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. 17And if children, then heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

18For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is about to be revealed to us. 19For the created order waits with eager expectation for the revealing of the sons of God. 20For the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will but through the one who subjected it, in hope 21that even the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22For we know that the entire creation has been groaning together and suffering birth pains together until now. 23And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as heirs, the redemption of our bodies. 24For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees? 25But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with endurance.

26In the same way, the Spirit also helps us in our weakness. For we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes with sighs too deep for words. 27And the one who searches hearts knows what the mindset of the Spirit is, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in harmony with God’s will.

28And we know that for those who love God, all things work together for good—for those who are called according to his purpose. 29For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. 30And those whom he predestined, he also called; and those whom he called, he also justified; and those whom he justified, he also glorified.

31What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33Who will bring a charge against God’s chosen ones? It is God who justifies. 34Who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, and who is interceding for us. 35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36As it is written: For your sake we are being put to death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37No, in all these things we are overwhelmingly victorious through him who loved us. 38For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor rulers, neither things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39neither height nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
