1 Corinthians 12

1Now concerning spiritual matters, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2You know that when you were pagans, you were swept away toward voiceless idols, led along however you were driven. 3Therefore, I make it clear to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say, Jesus is Lord!” except by the Holy Spirit.

4Now there are varieties of charismata (grace-gifts), but the same Spirit; 5and there are varieties of services, and the same Lord; 6and there are varieties of workings, but it is the same God who works all things in everyone. 7To each is given the disclosure of the Spirit for the common good. 8For to one is given through the Spirit a word of wisdom, and to another a word of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9to a different person faith by the same Spirit, to another charismata of healings by the one Spirit, 10to another the workings of powers, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to a different person various kinds of languages, and to another the interpretation of languages. 11All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, distributing to each person individually just as he wills.

12For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so also is the Christ. 13For in one Spirit we were all immersed into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and we were all given one Spirit to drink.

14For the body consists not of one member but of many. 15If the foot should say, Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that does not make it any less a part of the body. 16And if the ear should say, Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that does not make it any less a part of the body. 17If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? 18But as it is, God arranged the members, each one of them in the body, just as he desired. 19If all were a single member, where would the body be? 20As it is, there are many members, but one body.

21The eye cannot say to the hand, I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.” 22On the contrary, the members of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23and those parts of the body that we think are less honorable, we clothe with greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty, 24whereas our presentable parts have no such need. But God has composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, 25so that there may be no schism in the body, but that the members may have the same concern for one another. 26If one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if a member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.

27Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually. 28And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then powers, then charismata of healings, helps, helmsmanship, and various kinds of languages. 29Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work powers? 30Do all possess charismata of healings? Do all speak in languages? Do all interpret? 31But be zealous for the greater charismata. And now I will show you a way that goes beyond all bounds.
