1 Timothy 3

1This saying is trustworthy: if someone aspires to the role of an overseer, they desire a noble work. 2Therefore, the overseer must be beyond reproach, a man faithful to one woman, clear-headed, self-controlled, orderly in conduct, hospitable, and skilled at teaching. 3He must not be a heavy drinker or a bully, but instead be gentle and yielding, not looking for a fight, and not a lover of money. 4He must manage his own household well, keeping his children in a state of respectful cooperation with all dignity. 5(For if someone does not know how to manage their own household, how will they take care of God’s assembly?) 6He must not be a recent convert, so that he does not become blinded by conceit and fall into the same judgment as the Slanderer. 7Furthermore, he must have a good reputation among those on the outside, so that he does not fall into disgrace and into the Slanderer’s trap.

8Servant-ministers, likewise, must be people of dignity, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, and not greedy for dishonest gain. 9They must hold the mystery of the faith with a clean conscience. 10Let these also be scrutinized first; then, if they are found to be beyond accusation, let them serve as ministers. 11The women, likewise, must be dignified, not slanderers, but clear-headed and faithful in all things. 12Servant-ministers should be men faithful to one woman, managing their children and their own households well. 13For those who have served well as ministers gain for themselves a noble standing and great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.

14I am writing these things to you, hoping to come to you soon. 15But if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how it is necessary to conduct oneself in God’s household, which is the assembly of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth. 16Beyond all dispute, great is the mystery of our devotion: He was revealed in the flesh, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was proclaimed among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory.
