John 12

Six days before the Passover, Jesus arrived at Bethany, where Lazarus lived—the man Jesus had raised from the dead. 2There they prepared a dinner for him. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. 3Then Mary took a litra of expensive, authentic nard perfume and anointed the feet of Jesus, wiping his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples—the one who was about to betray him—said, 5"Why wasn't this perfume sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?" 6He did not say this because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; as the one in charge of the money box, he used to pilfer what was put into it.

Jesus replied, "Leave her alone; let her keep what she has for the day of my burial. 8For you will always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me."

A large crowd of the Judeans learned he was there and came, not only because of Jesus, but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 10So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well, 11because on account of him, many of the Judeans were going over to Jesus and putting their trust in him.

The next day, the large crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. 13They took branches from palm trees and went out to meet him, shouting: "Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Even the King of Israel!"

Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written:

"Do not be afraid, Daughter of Zion; Behold, your King is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt."

His disciples did not understand these things at first. But when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him. 17The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to testify. 18This is also why the crowd went out to meet him: they heard he had performed this sign. 19The Pharisees therefore said to one another, "You see that you are achieving nothing. Look, the whole kosmos has gone after him!"

Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the festival. 21They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request: "Sir, we wish to see Jesus." 22Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus.

Jesus answered them, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24Truly, truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25The one who loves their life loses it, and the one who hates their life in this kosmos will preserve it for the life of the age to come. 26If anyone serves me, they must follow me; and where I am, my servant will be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor them.

Now my soul is deeply disturbed. And what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? No, it was for this very reason that I came to this hour. 28Father, glorify your name!" Then a voice came from heaven: "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again."

The crowd standing there heard it and said it had thundered. Others said, "An angel has spoken to him!"

Jesus answered, "This voice did not come for my sake, but for yours. 31Now is the judgment of this kosmos; now the ruler of this kosmos will be cast out. 32And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself." 33He said this to signify the kind of death he was going to die.

The crowd answered him, "We have heard from the Law that the Messiah remains forever. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this 'Son of Man'?"

Jesus said to them, "The light is among you for only a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, so that the darkness does not overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where they are going. 36While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may become sons of light." Jesus said these things, then departed and hid himself from them. 37Even though he had performed so many signs in their presence, they did not believe in him. 38This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet, which he spoke: "Lord, who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?"

For this reason they could not believe, because Isaiah also said:

"He has blinded their eyes and calloused their hearts, so they might not see with their eyes, and understand with their hearts, and turn—and I would heal them."

Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory and spoke about him. 42Nevertheless, many even of the authorities believed in him, but because of the Pharisees they would not confess it, so that they would not be expelled from the synagogue. 43For they loved the glory that comes from humans more than the glory that comes from God.

Then Jesus cried out: "The one who believes in me does not believe in me but in the one who sent me. 45And the one who sees me sees the one who sent me. 46I have come into the kosmos as light, so that everyone who believes in me should not remain in the darkness. 47If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge them; for I did not come to judge the kosmos but to save the kosmos. 48The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge: the word I have spoken will judge them on the last day. 49For I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment regarding what to say and what to speak. 50And I know that his commandment is the life of the age to come. Therefore, the things I speak—I speak them exactly as the Father has told me."
