John 13

Now before the festival of Passover, Jesus, knowing that his hour had come to pass from this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, loved them to the end.

And during supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, to betray him, 3Jesus—knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come forth from God and was going back to God— 4rises from the supper and lays aside his outer garments. He took a linen towel and wrapped it around himself. 5Then he pours water into the basin and began to wash the feet of the disciples and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

So he comes to Simon Peter. He says to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?"

Jesus answered and said to him, "What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will understand after these things."

Peter says to him, "You will never wash my feet—not for all eternity!" Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no share with me."

Simon Peter says to him, "Lord, then not only my feet, but also my hands and my head!"

Jesus says to him, "The one who has bathed has no need to wash, except for the feet, but is entirely clean. And you are clean—but not all of you." 11For he knew the one who was betraying him; that is why he said, "Not all of you are clean."

So when he had washed their feet and taken up his garments and reclined again, he said to them, "Do you understand what I have done for you? 13You call me 'the Teacher' and 'the Lord,' and you speak rightly, for I am. 14If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. 15For I have given you an example, so that just as I have done for you, you also should do. 16Truly, truly, I tell you: a slave is not greater than his master, nor is one who is sent out greater than the one who sent him. 17If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them."

"I am not speaking about all of you—I know whom I have chosen. But the Scripture must be fulfilled: 'The one who eats my bread has lifted his heel against me.' 19I am telling you now, before it happens, so that when it does happen you may believe that I AM. 20Truly, truly, I tell you: whoever receives anyone I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me."

After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in his spirit and testified, saying, "Truly, truly, I tell you that one of you will betray me."

The disciples began looking at one another, bewildered about whom he was speaking. 23One of his disciples—the one whom Jesus loved—was reclining at table close beside Jesus. 24So Simon Peter motions to him to find out who it might be about whom he is speaking. 25That disciple, leaning back thus against the chest of Jesus, says to him, "Lord, who is it?"

Jesus answers, "It is the one for whom I will dip the morsel and give it to him." So after dipping the morsel, he gives it to Judas, son of Simon Iscariot. 27And after the morsel, then Satan entered into him. So Jesus says to him, "What you are doing, do quickly."

Now no one at the table understood why he said this to him. 29For some were thinking, since Judas had the money box, that Jesus was telling him, "Buy what we need for the festival," or that he should give something to the poor. 30So after receiving the morsel, that man went out immediately. And it was night.

When he had gone out, Jesus says, "Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in him. 32If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and will glorify him at once. 33Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will search for me, and just as I said to the Jews, 'Where I am going, you cannot come,' so now I say to you. 34A new commandment I give to you: that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, so you also should love one another. 35By this everyone will know that you are my disciples—if you have love for one another."

Simon Peter says to him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus answered, "Where I am going you cannot follow me now, but you will follow later."

Peter says to him, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you."

Jesus answers, "Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I tell you: the rooster will not crow before you have denied me three times."
