John 13
1Now before the Passover Festival, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the uttermost. 2During supper, the devil had already put the intent into the heart of Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, to betray him. 3Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands and that he had come from God and was going back to God, 4got up from the meal, laid aside his outer garments, and taking a linen towel, he tied it around his waist. 5Then he poured water into a washbasin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel he had tied around himself.
6He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?" 7Jesus answered and said to him, "What I am doing you do not realize now, but you will understand after these things." 8Peter said to him, "You will never, ever wash my feet—not for as long as the age lasts!" Jesus answered him, "Unless I wash you, you have no share with me." 9Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!" 10Jesus said to him, "The one who has bathed has no need except to wash his feet, but is entirely clean. And you all are clean, though not every one of you." 11For he knew the one who was betraying him; for this reason he said, "Not every one of you is clean."
12So when he had washed their feet and put on his garments and reclined again, he said to them, "Do you grasp what I have done for you? 13You call me ‘The Teacher’ and ‘The Lord,’ and you are right to say so, for that is who I am. 14If I then—your Lord and Teacher—have washed your feet, you also are obligated to wash one another’s feet. 15For I have given you a pattern, so that just as I have done for you, you also should do. 16Amen, amen, I tell you: a slave is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17If you know these things, you are flourishing if you do them.
18I am not speaking about all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is so the Scripture may be fulfilled: ‘The one who eats my bread has lifted his heel against me.’ 19From now on I am telling you this before it happens, so that when it does happen you may believe that I am He. 20Amen, amen, I tell you: the one who receives anyone I send receives me, and the one who receives me receives the one who sent me."
21After saying these things, Jesus was deeply troubled in spirit and testified, "Amen, amen, I tell you that one of you will betray me." 22The disciples began looking at one another, at a loss as to which one he was talking about. 23One of his disciples, the one whom Jesus loved, was reclining at the table right next to Jesus’s chest. 24So Simon Peter signaled to him to ask who it might be that he was speaking about. 25Leaning back against Jesus’s chest, that disciple said to him, "Lord, who is it?" 26Jesus answered, "It is the one for whom I dip this morsel of bread and give it to him." So, having dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, son of Simon Iscariot. 27And after he took the morsel, Satan entered into him. Then Jesus said to him, "What you are doing, do quickly." 28But no one reclining at the table knew why he said this to him. 29Since Judas kept the money box, some thought Jesus was telling him, "Buy what we need for the festival," or that he should give something to the poor. 30So, after receiving the morsel, that man went out immediately. And it was night.
31When he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in him. 32If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him at once. 33Little children, I am with you only a little while longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Judeans, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come,’ I tell you now as well. 34A new commandment I give to you: that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also must love one another. 35By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."
36Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus answered, "Where I am going, you cannot follow me now, but you will follow later." 37Peter said to him, "Lord, why can’t I follow you right now? I will lay down my life for you!" 38Jesus answered, "Will you lay down your life for me? Amen, amen, I tell you: a rooster will certainly not crow until you have denied me three times."
