John 20

On the first day of the week, Mary the Magdalene comes to the tomb early while it was still dark, and she sees the stone having been removed from the tomb. 2So she runs and comes to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and says to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him."

So Peter and the other disciple went out and were making their way toward the tomb. 4The two were running together, but the other disciple ran ahead faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first. 5And stooping to look in, he sees the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in.

Then Simon Peter also comes, following him, and he entered into the tomb. And he observes the linen cloths lying there, 7and the face cloth, which had been on his head, not lying with the linen cloths but rolled up in a place by itself. 8Then the other disciple, who had arrived at the tomb first, also entered, and he saw and believed. 9For they did not yet understand the scripture, that it was necessary for him to rise from the dead. 10So the disciples went back home again.

But Mary stood outside the tomb weeping. As she wept, she stooped to look into the tomb, 12and she observes two angels in white, seated one at the head and one at the feet where the body of Jesus had been lying. 13And they say to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She says to them, "They have taken my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him."

Having said these things, she turned back around and observes Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15Jesus says to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?" She, supposing that he is the gardener, says to him, "Sir, if you are the one who carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away." 16Jesus says to her, "Mary." Turning, she says to him in Hebrew, "Rabbouni"—which means Teacher.

Jesus says to her, "Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and tell them: 'I am ascending to my Father and your Father, and my God and your God.'" 18Mary the Magdalene comes announcing to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord," and that he had said these things to her.

When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors having been locked where the disciples were because of fear of the Jewish authorities, Jesus came and stood in their midst and says to them, "Peace to you." 20And having said this, he showed them his hands and his side. So the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.

Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you. Just as the Father has sent me, so I am sending you." 22And having said this, he breathed on them and says to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive the sins of any, they have been forgiven them. If you retain the sins of any, they have been retained."

Now Thomas, one of the twelve, who is called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. 25So the other disciples were saying to him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and put my finger into the mark of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will never believe."

And after eight days, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Jesus comes, the doors having been locked, and stood in their midst and said, "Peace to you." 27Then he says to Thomas, "Bring your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not become unbelieving but believing." 28Thomas answered and said to him, "My Lord and my God!"

Jesus says to him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."

Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book. 31But these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and so that by believing you may have life in his name.
