Revelation 13

1And I saw a beast rising from the sea, having ten horns and seven heads, with ten royal crowns on its horns, and on its heads blasphemous names. 2The beast I saw was like a leopard, its feet like a bear's, and its mouth like the mouth of a lion. And the dragon gave it his power and his throne and great authority. 3One of its heads appeared to have been slaughtered to death, but its death-wound was healed. The whole earth was astonished and followed after the beast, 4and they worshiped the dragon because he gave authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast, saying, "Who is like the beast? Who can wage war against it?"

5And it was given a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies, and it was given authority to act for forty-two months. 6It opened its mouth in blasphemies against God, to blaspheme his name and his dwelling—those who dwell in heaven. 7And it was given permission to wage war against the holy ones and to conquer them, and it was given authority over every tribe and people and tongue and nation. 8And all who dwell on the earth will worship it—everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the scroll of life belonging to the Lamb who was slaughtered.

9If anyone has an ear, let them hear. 10If anyone is destined for captivity, to captivity they go. If anyone is to be killed by the sword, by the sword they must be killed. Here is the endurance and the faithfulness of the holy ones.

11Then I saw another beast rising from the earth. It had two horns like a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon. 12It exercises all the authority of the first beast in its presence, and it makes the earth and those who dwell in it worship the first beast, whose death-wound was healed. 13It performs great signs, even making fire come down from heaven to earth in the sight of people. 14It deceives those who dwell on the earth through the signs it was given power to perform in the presence of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image for the beast who has the sword-wound and came to life. 15And it was given power to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast might even speak and cause all who would not worship the image of the beast to be killed.

16It also makes everyone—the small and the great, the rich and the poor, the free and the slaves—receive a brand-mark on their right hand or on their forehead, 17so that no one can buy or sell unless they have the mark: the name of the beast or the number of its name. 18Here is wisdom: let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is a human number, and its number is six hundred sixty-six.
